Discontinuation of Scaffolding Apprentice Registration as of 1 July 2026 and Introduction of New Certification for Assistant Scaffolders
In the coming months, the revised Scaffolding Guidelines will be finalized. The registration of the Scaffolding Apprentice will not be included in this new version. Instead, a new certification structure for the Assistant Scaffolder will be introduced.
De Stichting Veilig Werken op Hoogte (SVWOH), The Foundation for Safe Working at Heights, which is responsible for implementing Chapter 7 of the Scaffolding Guidelines (covering tasks, responsibilities, and certification of scaffolding roles), has therefore decided to discontinue Scaffolding Apprentice Registration as of 1 July 2026.
Why is the Scaffolding Apprentice Registration being discontinued?
- The current Scaffolding Guidelines state that a future Assistant Scaffolder must have basic knowledge of scaffolding and be registered as an Scaffolding Apprentice with SVWOH.
- In the revised version of the guidelines, this registration requirement is removed.
- Employees assisting with the (dis)assembly of scaffolds must be certified as Assistant Scaffolders.
When will the new certification for Assistant Scaffolder begin?
- Certification for the new Assistant Scaffolder will be available starting in Q4 2025.
- The exact start date will be announced by SVWOH.
Transition period for Scaffolding Apprentice Registration
- Scaffolding Apprentice Registration ends on 1 July 2026.
- Until 1 July 2026, the following applies:
- Registration as an Aspirant Assistant Scaffolder remains possible until 1 July 2026.
- All registrations expire on 1 July 2026 and cannot be renewed.
- Registration costs remain unchanged at €90 excl. VAT.
- New AHM registrations from 1 July 2025 are valid only until 1 July 2026.
What does the new Assistant Scaffolder certification entail?
The new certification aligns with the requirements of Chapter 7 of the revised Scaffolding Guidelines. SVWOH aims to offer a high-quality and accessible training and examination pathway for Assistant Scaffolders while keeping costs as low as possible. This is achieved through two key components:
- Digital theory instruction
The theoretical content will be offered fully digitally and mobile-friendly. Candidates can study the material independently, in their own language and at their own pace, at a time that suits them best. - SVWOH examination and industry certificate
The Assistant Scaffolder exam will be administered by SVWOH-recognized examination organizations, under SVWOH supervision and with SVWOH exam staff. Successful candidates will receive an industry-recognized certificate issued by SVWOH.
In conclusion
With this change, SVWOH responds to the evolving requirements and expectations within the scaffolding sector, actively contributing to a future-proof, safe, and professional working environment.
SVWOH will manage this transition carefully and will keep all stakeholders informed in a timely manner about the next steps.
